Naturland - Association for Organic FarmingNaturland – Organic. Visionary. Fair trade.
Experts everywhere see organic and socially oriented agriculture as the key to combating global environmental problems, hunger and poverty.
Naturland has been promoting organic farming regionally and globally for 35 years. More than 43,000 growers in 46 countries around the world follow our strict guidelines. Social standards are an integral part of the Naturland eco-certification. In the seal Naturland Fair Naturland brings together organic farming and fair trade. The special feature: we also involve producers from the global North in Fair Trade. Because farmers must be able to live from their work worldwide.
Organic – more than a question of good taste
As a consumer, first of all, you can enjoy the sense of security which this form of agriculture provides - which manages to do without genetic engineering, synthetic chemical pesticides and mineral fertilizers to produce top quality, healthy foodstuffs. Species-appropriate animal husbandry, the exclusion of many additives, the encouragement of local economies and the creation of further jobs are other good reasons to opt for organic produce. Organic farmers conserve valuable resources, such as soil, water and climate, by encroaching as little as possible in the natural balance. In harmony with nature, they produce high-quality food.
Organic agriculture is soil conservation
Healthy, living soil is a climate saviour. It can sequester CO2, rain is absorbed quickly and can be stored longer. Conscious efforts must however be made to preserve living soil.
The world is literally losing its footing: every year, billions of tons of soil are lost to erosion.
Naturland farmers take immense care of their arable land in order to ensure the future stability of their harvest yields. To do so, they have adopted a wide range of measures designed to stabilise the soil structure and enhance the fertility of the soil whilst protecting the climate, fauna and flora.
With the help of intercropping, sensible crop rotation and species-rich agro forestry systems, they conserve the soil’s fertility and encourage its regeneration. They make deliberate efforts to form humus by spreading organic fertiliser and planting legumes such as clover/grass leys, peas and beans which bind nitrogen. By growing continuous ground coverage in the form of catch crops and undersown crops, they improve the soil’s ability to retain water, thus contributing to flood and erosion control.
100% Naturland organic
Naturland farmers the world over place a wealth of top-quality raw materials on the market. And if in a bar of chocolate organic fair-trade cocoa from Peru, organic fair-trade cane sugar from Paraguay and organic fair-trade milk from Germany are processed, then it is a win-win situation – for farmers, processers, the trade and the consumer – because they are all links in the chain of one common conscientious commercial policy of agriculture
Naturland standards - honest and transparent
The development of standards and their implementation into practice is at the heart of the work of an organic association. The Naturland standards focus on a holistic approach, sustainable management, practiced natural and climate protection, safeguarding and preserving soil, air and water as well as protecting the consumer. Naturland certification standards range from organic plant and animal production, aquaculture, sustainable capture fishery to processing as well as non-food areas like forest management, cosmetics and textiles. Social standards are an integral part of the Naturland certification.
The Naturland standards can be found on our website.
